Skincare should be simple. That’s why each Root product is labeled with a step number to guide your routine. You can use just one product or build a full routine — every formula stands on its own. Understanding the Steps
Each Root Apothecary product is assigned a step number to help you layer your skincare in an effective, intuitive order. Each number (1 through 5) corresponds to a step listed below.
You’ll find the number on your product label, right below the instructions.
If there’s no number, that just means the product is flexible or designed for the body.
You may also see a small sun or moon symbol on the label. This is a simple guide for when to use the product — morning, evening, or both.
Quick note: Just because a product has a step number — like Step 5 — doesn’t mean you need to apply four other products first. These numbers are a guide, not a rule. Use what your skin needs, in the order that works best for you.
Simple Steps
Step one
Cleanse
Start with an oil cleanse, a gentle polish, or a soapless cleanser to remove buildup, makeup sunscreen, and impurities without stripping your skin.
Step two
Hydrate
This step delivers moisture — the foundation your skin needs to make the most of each product that follows.
Step Three
Treat
Apply treatment oils or serums that deliver actives and antioxidants. These formulas tend to have a lighter texture and absorb quickly to target specific skin concerns.
Step Four
Moisture Lock
Follow with a rich oil or cream to deeply nourish and restore the skin barrier. This step helps seal in hydration and support long-term skin health.
Step Five
Optional Seal
Finish with a balm, whip, or butter to lock everything in. This step is especially helpful in dry climates, during colder months, or for compromised skin barriers.
You Don’t Need Every Step
You can use just one product or build a full routine. Our system is here to simplify your choices, not pressure you to buy more. Each product is made to stand on its own. Sometimes less is more for your skin. Other times, a complete routine is what’s needed to see the most effective results. It all depends on you and your skin!
